What happens when we do not have enough iodine?
If the body does not get enough iodine, the person lacks thyroid hormones, and the body loses control over the correct operation of its organs. The job of the thyroid gland can be compared to the position of Executive Director at the company. Like the Director follows objects and requirements laid down by a company owner, the thyroid gland follows instructions laid by the pituitary gland. However, in order that the thyroid gland is able to carry out its roles properly, it needs iodine. Iodine is the basic substance of hormones which are produced by the thyroid gland and affect the proper function of other organs. The thyroid gland (struma) becomes bigger under a long-term and deep deficit of iodine. In small children, it may result in cretenism (mental and physical retardation).
